A comparative analysis of plasticity of thermal limits in porcelain crabs across latitudinal and intertidal zone clines

چکیده
The effect of thermal acclimation on cardiac thermal performance limits was examined in congeneric species of porcelain crabs (genus Petrolisthes) from temperate and subtropical habitats. In vivo heart rate was monitored using impedance electrodes during thermal ramps (0.1 8C/min) where temperature either increased or decreased from an intermediate temperature to thermal extremes. Arrhenius plots were used to define upper and lower critical temperatures of cardiac function (CTmax and CTmin, respectively). Across species and acclimation conditions, CTmax ranged from approximately 28.4 to 41.7 8C and CTmin from approximately 1.3 to 11.3 8C. Thermal acclimation had the greatest effect on CTmax in species from the coolest thermal microhabitat and the smallest effect on CTmax in species from the hottest thermal microhabitat. The opposite effect was observed on CTmin. The ecological consequences of these results are counterintuitive, as the most heat-tolerant species are predicted to be most susceptible to global warming. The results of this study will form the foundation of future studies designed to elucidate the mechanistic bases of thermal plasticity and eurythermy in porcelain crabs. D 2004 Elsevier B.V. Causes and consequences of thermal tolerance limits in rocky intertidal porcelain crabs, genus petrolisthes.
Vertical zonation of intertidal organisms, from the shallow subtidal to the supralittoral zones, is a ubiquitous feature of temperate and tropical rocky shores. Organisms that live higher on the shore experience larger daily and seasonal fluctuations in microhabitat conditions, due to their greater exposure to terrestrial conditions during emersion. Comparative analyses of the adaptive linkage ...
متن کاملA comparative analysis of the upper thermal tolerance limits of eastern Pacific porcelain crabs, genus Petrolisthes: influences of latitude, vertical zonation, acclimation, and phylogeny.
Marine intertidal organisms are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses, including aerial exposure and wide ranges of temperature. Intertidal species generally have higher thermal tolerance limits than do subtidal species, and tropical species have higher thermal tolerance limits than do temperate species. The adaptive significance of upper thermal tolerance limits of intertidal organisms, h...
متن کاملAcclimation capacity underlies susceptibility to climate change.
Recent reports have presented meta-analyses of global biological impacts of climate change (1, 2). However, there is debate as to the level of confidence ascribed to the certainty that global climate change has caused the observed biological changes (3). Two important considerations in the assessment of how climate change will impact organisms are (i) how close organisms are to their thermal li...
متن کاملTemperature and acidification variability reduce physiological performance in the intertidal zone porcelain crab Petrolisthes cinctipes.
We show here that increased variability of temperature and pH synergistically negatively affects the energetics of intertidal zone crabs. Under future climate scenarios, coastal ecosystems are projected to have increased extremes of low tide-associated thermal stress and ocean acidification-associated low pH, the individual or interactive effects of which have yet to be determined. To character...
متن کاملAdaptation to temperature stress and aerial exposure in congeneric species of intertidal porcelain crabs (genus Petrolisthes): correlation of physiology, biochemistry and morphology with vertical distribution
We examined physiological and biochemical responses to temperature and aerial exposure in two species of intertidal porcelain crabs (genus Petrolisthes) that inhabit discrete vertical zones. On the shores of the Northeastern Pacific, P. cinctipes (Randall) occurs under rocks and in mussel beds in the mid to high intertidal zone and P. eriomerus (Stimpson) occurs under rocks in the low intertida...
